ARMOR
Armor is a good thing. It keeps you alive for a longer amount of time in combat. Armor in Harchaon Hill must be realistic in that it must be made of the proper materials (leather and metal) and it must also be safe. Safe armor has no sharp edges or points. All armor will be inspected at the beginning of each event before it is allowed onto the field. Helmets are allowed only if they are constructed safely.
There are six classes of armor. These range from AC:5 (no armor) to AC:0 (plate or banded armor). Different classes allow different types of armor to be worn by the character as defined by their character class descriptions. Armor counts only to the area of the body it protects. If a player is wearing AC:0 (plate armor) on their leg and an arrow hits the player on the joint where there is no armor then it is a hit to AC:5 and the leg takes a light wound. Also, wearing multiple layers of armor does not give you added protection. If a player is wearing banded armor (AC:0) with chain mail (AC:2) beneath it, each hit counts to both pieces of armor, so the player is only given the benefits of the strongest armor worn, not both. Direct any questions to the Armor Marshall.
Armor Requirements and Classes
- AC:5 -- No Armor, just costume
- AC:4 -- LEATHER (at least 5 ounces, no leather jackets), LEATHER SCALE (leather pieces sewn to heavy material in alternating rows)
- AC:3 -- STUDDED LEATHER (leather armor covered entirely with smooth metal studs of 1/2" dia. - no spikes - with even distribution), RING MAIL (non-flexible rings no larger than 2" in dia. attached to heavy material), SPLINT MAIL (18 gauge metal plates on heavy material with rounded edges)
- AC:2 -- CHAIN MAIL (1/2" dia. of 12 gauge metal, 3/8" dia. of 14 gauge metal, or 1/4" dia. of 16 gauge metal. Chains must hang correctly) Note: Chain Mail does not stop arrows.
- AC:1 -- BUTTED (18 gauge steel plates, at least 2" square, w/ filed edges, riveted to heavy material with no gap between plates), SCALE MAIL (18 gauge steel plates, at least 2"x3", with rounded bottoms attached to heavy material in alternating rows)
- AC:0 -- PLATE (made of 18 gauge steel with filed, rounded edges so no one can be cut by it. It must cover 3/4 of any limb it is placed on. it is recommended that plate be covered with foam and duct tape for safety. Aluminum plate is forbidden), BANDED (overlapping layers of 18 gauge steel bands, with filed edges, attached to heavy material, leaving no gaps anywhere.
SHIELDS
Shields are always beneficial to characters who can use them and fight with them effectively. Shields can block most attacks except for certain relics and spells. Shields can be rendered useless if struck 3 times with a shield destroying wepaon. Hits that glance off shields do not count except for hits made by flails and mourning stars. Several shapes are available for shield design as long as the shape does not include points sharp enough to poke through the foam covering given enough pressure. Shields must be padded with enough foam so that the wood/bolts are not felt when the shield is hit at full-force. Shields must be covered with a cloth cover. Players that belong to countries must have their country colors and emblem on it. Nobles can have their own personal symbols on their shields. Nomads must cover their shield with either a brown or gray cover. There are no size requirements for shields excpet for bucklers. Bucklers must be between 12 and 18 inches in diameter and must be made of wood at least 1/4" thick. All other shields must be made of 1/2" wood. Any questions about shield construction should be directed to the Armor Marshall.
